- עָפַשPi. עִרפֵּש to grow mouldy, decay. Pes.15b; 45b הפת שעִיפְּשָׁהוכ׳ bread that is spoiled so as to be unfit for man to eat Tosef. ib. II (III), 4 שעִיפְּשוּ או שיבשו which have become mouldy or dried up. Tosef.Ter.IX, 10 פת שעִיפֵּישָׁה (ed. Zuck.). Tanḥ. Mick. 7 פת … עִפְּשָׁה the bread in our vessels has become mouldy. Y.Yoma III, 41a bot. לא היתה מִעַפֶּשֶׁת it never grew mouldy; Bab. ib. 38a מִתְעַפֶּשֶׁת; Tosef. ib. II, 5; Y.Shek.V, 48d bot. מתע׳; a. e. Hithpa. הִתְעַפֵּש, Nithpa. נִתְעַפֵּש same, v. supra. Gen. R. s. 31 שלא ירקבו ולא יִתְעַפְּשוּוכ׳ that they (the fruits in the ark) should not rot, or mould, or be disfigured.
